Bavaria only draw against Freiburg

For the Bavarians, the goal was clear: Three points against the sports club are needed to travel relaxed to the league summit in Dortmund next week. They had to do without Thiago, who suffered a ligament injury in the cup match against Rödinghausen. Joshua Kimmich moved up to six for the Spaniard. Rafinha was on the four-man backfield. Renato Sanches was also allowed to play from the beginning, Javi Martinez got a break. Freiburg’s route was clear: keep the Bavarians away from their own goal and get into dangerous attacking situations every now and then. In the first 15 minutes, the Munich team pressed the accelerator. They controlled the game at will, only big chances were still in short supply. After the good initial phase, however, the offensive efforts diminished. The Bavarians fell back into a lethargic game. In the 26th minute Lewandowski had the great chance to 1:0, but Schwolow was able to parry.

Kaumer Spielfreude

Arjen Robben had a good opportunity ten minutes before half-time, but the Freiburg goalkeeper was also there. With a not undeserved 0:0 it went into the cabin. Freiburg took part in the game offensively only very rarely, but defended skilfully without only destroying. After the restart the team of Christian Streich even became more courageous. There was still not much going on at the Bavarians, so the Freiburgers gave it a try. They even scored in the 54th minute, but the goal was correctly missed due to an offside position. A few minutes later, there was excitement on the other side. Gulde, the ball had jumped to his hand in the penalty area. Referee Felix Zwayer checked the scene but did not detect any intentional handball. The penalty kick was therefore not taken. Over long stretches of the second half, FC Bayern showed itself to be frighteningly weak. In the offensive not much happened, so that the fans expressed their displeasure with whistles.

Turbulent final phase

In the 80th minute of the game the Munich team scored after all. After combinations on this afternoon brought no success, it was a single action. Serge Gnabry walked through the Freiburg back line and scored his first goal of the season to make it 1-0. But the lead did not provide the Bavarians with the usual security. In the 89th minute, Lukas Höhler scored with his head to equalize. The 1:1 was not undeserved for the Breisgau team. The again weak performance of FC Bayern was already the fourth winless game in the Allianz Arena in a row. Freiburg cheered for the point they had won after the final whistle. The SC had lost every duel in Munich for over 20 years. Joshua Kimmich showed his probably worst performance in the FC Bayern jersey. His duel quota during the game was sometimes below seven percent. If the Bavarians want to win in Dortmund next game day, they will have to improve their performance significantly. Meanwhile, the pressure on coach Niko Kovac is growing.
